So I snapped the mount that holds the tie rod to the diff/axle housing today... Can I weld that back on with normal mig wire?

you mean panard rod? tie rod goes to knuckle to knuckle i think

Yes. Ad as per zooky08 it's probably your panhard mount.

Add some gussets so it doesn't happen again.

Yeah knuckle to knuckle to attach t to the sway bar? Am I talking bout the right bit?

tie rod goes from one knuckle to the other kbuckle behind the diff under the diff center on a jimny, your talking about that rod.
if so, it doesnt connect to the sway bar at all. if your talking about the mount were the rod goes from the chassis down to the diff housing thats the panhard rod, ifs its the mount on the knuckle then that is cast iron im pretty sure and no normal mig wire wont work. like jas said pic would be good

Thats a swaybar mount and swaybar.

Its happened to someone else on here before.

Make a new one, make them both stronger on the diff side

Get a new swaybar. That is mangled to hell. what were you doing??


The swaybar is springsteel.
The mount will be mild

Good to see those middle links held up, im using them on mine :lol:

So if i was to make some new ones out of mild steel, i could then weld them in the place of the old ones onto the diff housing?

It's got me beat why they make so many parts that need to be strong out of cast alloy???

I was wheeling out at Killingworth... Still don't know what I hit to break it to be honest... It was a pretty mild day lol.... but... apart from doing that,

My rim had a heap of mud stuck on the inside and got a nasty wobble up at around 60km/h, so I put the spare on till I got home... however 1500m from home I got a major wobble and then all of a sudden the wheel came off and shot down the road, and narrowly missed going through a front window of a house, and ended up stopping after hitting the rear wheel of the triton parked in the driveway (luckily it was there... he normally has a smick 351 Ford GT parked there :S ). So after putting the spare on and started heading home again... My gf spilt iced coffee in the car too :D

Most awesome day of wheeling EVER!!!! NOT!!!

Same happened to my jimny...

It is the best accidental mod i've ever done. You can improve your performance now by remounting the sway bar carefully under your workbench. Sit it on the cement, leaning against the wall so it can't fall down when you are tinkering.

Now go for a drive and enjoy your newfound offroad ability.

And I dont think it's cast alloy...

lol yeah I was thinking of leaving it out, but the other half drives it too so I'm a little worried about her hitting roundabouts too hard lol... It just looks to be a cast alloy??? I'll hit it with a grinder tomoz and see what happens... Alloy shouldnt spark should it?

The only things cast alloy in a jim will be engine+bits, gbox, transfer.

Yeah I don't get how I lost all 5 wheel studs... I made sure I tightened them all by stepping on the tire lever and everything... Just not my day apparently! Just super glad no one got hurt!

My transfer mount is cast alloy?? Snapped it like a twig at the beach lol

is there any leagalities to leaving the sway bar out? I'd imagine there'd have to be???

Oh yeah jims transfer mounts are too.

Yes definatly. If you have a crash with no swaybar, insurance companies won't like it.

I'm picking up the new 30x9.5 KM2's tomoz, Josh is comin over Tuesday to gimme a hand to chop the gaurds... Transfer gears are on the way... Need all this sorted before July cause I'm going to do Fraser and Moreton Island :(

This comment comes up so often and I usually just laugh and say nothing, however I don't know you and have not read your posts before so for what it is worth here is my 2 cents worth:

Why worry about the legalities of running a sway bar or the poor handing for your girlfriend without a sway bar when you going to make the car illegal by choping guards and running big tyres. The reason those big tyres are illegal on your car is because engineers who know what they are on about say that they will adversly affect the safe handing of your car and make your car more dangerous at speed on the road due to the added unsprung weight and extra stresses they will put on your mechanical components.

Seriously DOT and cops are going to pull you over for tyres and chopped guards long before they will notice you have no sway bar fitted, if you crash they may not even notice the missing sway bar unless your crash warrants a mechanical inspection (which most crashes dont) but they will notice that you have bigger tyres.

So I guess what I am trying to say is if you are concerned about insurance and legalities stay within the confines of the law with everything on the vehicle. If you want the benifits of no sway bar in the bush but still want the benifits of sway bar on the road maybe you should ty to source a sway bar quick release kit for your car.

(By the way, personally I think the tyres you are getting and the size you have chosen are not too big, if I had a Jimny that would probably be the size I would try to run as well, they are a good choice)
