I agree with the use of "hemisphere" but I think that's in even less common use than third member, and as you pointed out, it doesn't differentiate between dropout style diffs and dana/sailsbury. Steve. Steve isn't your use of "spider gear or 'pin' " adding to the multiple name confusion? Why does the term "hemisphere" need to differentiate(no pun int..) between Salisbury and Banjo. A hemisphere is almost identical between them anyway. Let's face it... The car wasn't invented and each part named by one guy. The car has been designed and built and modified and changed and improved by thousands of engineers over the years and being from different times and different countries they came up with different names for the same parts, so now there are several possible terms for the same part which leads to confusion... EG: The computer in your car might be an ECM or EMS or ECU.

Not really, want33's, spider gears and pins are different parts, but they do relate to each other, so I don't think it's really confusing - more pins = more spider gears.
I don't consider Dana/sailsbury type diffs to have any sort of name for the middle bit of the housing another than carrier, as it's basically integral to the axlehousing. The yanks use "centre section" IIRC ( which is different to "centre") I'm just not really fond of "hemisphere" because it's a catch all term.
Take an MQ/ MK patrol. The front end is dana style and the rear is dropout third member style- they both have a hemisphere, but the approach and assembly of each end is totally different
Steve.

The parts (hemispheres) are basically identical so should be named accordingly, why should the assembly or dissassembly procedure dictate the name of the part?

That happens all the time though. We have unit bearings, for example, Which have all the same parts as a normal wheel bearing assembly, but are pressed together, so they are called something different to differentiate themselves from a regular, user-serviceable wheel bearing. It's still a wheel bearing and still has a hub, bearings, etc etc. IMHO hemisphere implies an "area" of the axlehousing, Not necessarily anything that's in it. Anyways, it's all semantics now. The alternative might be technical German, where every word is a precise description of its function or assembly. Much less confusion....... Much longer words. Steve.

Sort of reminds me of the poor under recognised hub. The wheel was and is a fantastic invention recognised internationally since the dawn of time but without a hub a wheel cannot be put to work ?

Taken from the FSM. Should settle all arguments, you can't argue with what Suzuki call their parts. Although I'm sure someone will try...

The particular name of an item is not really that important, because each of these have a different term in different parts of the world. If you have got most of your Tech from US websites or magazines, then you will tend to use US terms. Likewise with British or Aus stuff. For example Ring and Pinion is a fairly well recognised US term, but the British call them a Crown Wheel and Bevel Gear! The important part is to know what it is and what it does. The point of this thread wasn't to argue about the names of bits, but to have clarity in what everyone is talking about.
It's like buying a Beer in a pub in Aust. Depending where you are in the country, you might ask for a Pint, Pot, Schooner or Jar. Get it wrong and you'll get either a blank stare or a torrent of abuse (especially on State of Origin night!). But the important thing is to make sure it's Big and Cold and paid for by a mate!
