Hey Guys,

Im new to here aswell to the Jimny's so bare with me :hey:

My name is Rick, and my partner is now a proud owner of a 04 jimny!

But, can anyone help us in the direction of what we can do the the almighty little beast and if anyone can share any info so i can then understand in as much info on this as possible and what we can do to it?

As far as i know so far is this - it has the 1.3L (gutless as all hell :P) and the gear ratios for the highway is very VERY short! its very stock ill put it that way with around 143,xxxkms on the clock.

this will be mostly a Daily/Highway driven zook with light to moderate 4wd'ing/Beach driving but nothing over the top for all of you to know what we will be doing with it.

Any help is much appreciated!

DOHC or single cam?? I would probably go one size up on the tyres to help with it on the freeway, but the fuel economy will suffer a little bit around town. Mine still does around 4000rpm at 110km/h, but thats where the engine develops most of it's torque at, so if you change that too much by way of gearing or tyre size, you'll find it'll bog down at the sight of any hills on the freeway. As for mods, I'd probably go an OME 40mm spring lift because it's nice and soft and will make it more comfortable around town, and maybe an airlocker for the back diff. These mods will make it quite a capable offroader. A quality bullbar will also improve the approach angle of the front of the car and some quality rocksliders will protect the sills. Don't think you will need much more than that

+1 dont need to spend money on stuff you dont need. Maybe some A/T's next tyre change and thats it.

if you get a lazy grand or so burning a hole in your pocket, maybe put 2inch lift and leave stock rims+a/t

Pretty sure it has the G13BB SOHC motor in it?

i think i may already have slightly larger tyres on it already? i will investigate.
as far as fuel economy, one full talk to empty is 300km which is sort of concerning...
i was hoping that if there was a way to extend the gearing and 'maybe' (keyword :P) install either a super/turbo charger on it then it will help balance it out (not going anything crazy in the sense of power) but this is a conversation my partner and i were considering since it has next to no power and fuel economy is up the creek.

has anyone come across a suitable engine conversion for these at all?

definitely was looking at getting some suspension mods done, same with with air locker but was also looking at these Lock Right diffs you can install aswell but am not sure if they are worth it.

the bullbar it currently has looks to be quite rigid and sturdy so i think we are covered there, rocksliders would be a +

X2 on the compressor
Diff breathers
first aid kit
fire extinguisher
recovery points front and rear
A/T tyres
Join a club so you aren't going out on your own.

Then a diff lock in the rear.

Suspenion? Low priority. It's not going to allow a bigger tyre and if you are doing beach and light 4WDing spending money on suspension is a waste of money.

take a look on the ones u have.. stock tyres re 205/70/r15..... u should go for 215/75/r15 is the next size up... Ill give u 1" of clearance, plus it wont mess with ur gearing that much

If it's a 2004 it would be a M13A motor

Don't worry about the short gears on the highway, you'll get used to it. These motors thrive on revs. Around town you'll find it gutless if you shift before 5000rpm. This is still well short of redline, Zuke motors love a bit of rpm it's normal.

I agree with the keep it simple at first approach, even a locker is overkill in 90% of cases, especially for a beach rig. Some rustproofing may be a good idea.

Hey guys,

Been too long since i have replied, too much stuff has happened in the last 7 months and, most weren't so good :(

Moved house and about to move again.

Had/having so many problems with my current Starlet Glanza V.

Changed Jobs.

And the list goes on.... Phew!

Good News is,

Me and my partner of 5.5years will FINALLY move into our first house together and, i now have been working for ARB Nundah for 5 months! How awesome is that!!!

Now to the point, The Jimny has seen a 2" OME Suspension Lift Kit installed (already had a lift kit previously, was ratty though) and, installed a proper Redarc Dual Battery System with a Repco 270cca battery as the auxiliary (previous dual battery setup was crap).

Now the Dramas,

Idle drops real low straight after disengaging clutch coming to at a set of lights to it at idle, i have seen on here and many other forums. Haven't come across anyone giving a solid 'solution' so, i have tried the PCV Valve and doing a Subaru Upper Cylinder Cleaner but, to no luck..

On Australia Day, we managed to break the mounting off of the front Diff for the driver's side sway bar link

The Main Battery is dying :( (Swealing, indicator constantly on 'Recharge' and starting is getting sluggish) would like to find a descent battery suitable to replace, the current one has 370cca but, as most jimny's, the have the crappy small terminals..

We have gone through i first main belt as from what looks like to have snapped :S Replaced but, soon found the Tensioner Pulley is chewing the belts up and is now requiring both to be replaced, does anyone have a part number for these tensioner's?

Future Plans

Have decided on The M16A
The Compressor
Breathers
First Aid
Fire Extinguisher

Am however, undecided on a few in particular parts. Now, i know few of would nd most likely will have strong disagreements. which is why, i ask for good, constructive critism and why you disagree :)

2" body lift
brake line extensions
Brake bias extension
steering arm extension
Caster correction bushes
Decent Offset white Sunraisers (or equivalent) in 15"s with A/T's to suit (even 31's would be nice!)

Plus, i ask if there is anything we should buy and install! anything will be taken into consideration!

Has anyone been able to find a pair of front and rear Recovery Points to suit the Jimny's?

Thanks guys!

If you plan to go 31 you don't need body lift at all. But you will need to spend a bit of money to get your Jimmy strong enough to run 31s. brake extension you only really need over 50mm. I I'm not sure you can get the right castor bushes for 40mm. IMO 40mm you don't need them. For recovery points you will have to make them your self. There's a thread on here some were.

Yeah 31's are a bit of overkill for us TBH we did try and fit a friends 31 muddys but instantly scrubbed the guard as soon as we lowered it down after fitment... so we will probably stick with those 215/75's morely just want a better foot print and better wider track but making sure that we only require the 2" sus lift not everything else...

I had thought about the correction bushes because of the steering being a bit vague plus, i like positive castor

My wife's Jimny also eats belts and almost dies of low idle when you stop at lights. I found with the alternator belt you need to tension it right up (use a long bar and decent force) and then after a week, tighten it again. The other belt seems to be OK.

I haven't worked out the low idle thing yet, so can't help you there.

Watch out you dont break the cam angle sensor when you stick the bar in to tighten the alternator

31s on a jimny? No chance without mods (mods that require more mods and so on)

I tried 235s and even though they were bald they scrubbed (this is worse for those of us with an ARB bar cos it hits the bar too) and besides the gearing sucked.

My advice is you can build a nice jimny or a tough one. The nice ones arent as tough, but the tough ones arent very nice (to your wallet, safety, driveability etc)

Build it nice then learn to drive (practising is fun, no?)

All in all, a nice Jimny :) we both don't want to do crazy but more practicality which is why, we both want to know what is best for suspension/body/wheel/drivechain without sacrificing reliability.

Practice, BIG Definate for both of us! im tired of my car having modding it to the point of 'no such thing as reliable'

I love y car to pieces but its costing me so much to repair... which is going to be, fix whats wrong with it currently (before the 2-way LSD destroys something else) and sell... :'(

1) 2in lift (I have castor correction bushes, dunno how they perform without it with this lift)
2) 215/75 ATs or MTs (get as aggressive as you can stand on the road, or do what I do, run 2 sets of wheels with road tyres and play tyres) (get a KCI easywrench or similar for fast and easy wheel set changes)
3) Remove swaybar
4) Have fun
5) Repeat 4

As far as a better choice of batteries: see an auto electrician and get your battery terminals replaced with lugs. Then get a battery that either has stud terminals or terminals with holes and flattened tops to accept back-to-back lugs. I upgraded the wiring in my coily after an alternator upgrade and the standard terminals were first to go!

Image

As for compressor, first aid and fire extinguisher, all of those would be gear that you should have in your vehicle every time you wheel - just as important as a snatch strap.

As for the future mods you listed, there is a Suzuki Club based in North Brisbane. I rarely wheel with them but I am a member and as such see the pics of all their awesome trips and know some of them are suited to people like yourself who can't decide what mods to do to there vehicle yet - you would be able to see differently modified vehicles all Suzuki and most SWB tackling the same obstacles and you could see what works well and not-so-well in different circumstances...

Thanks for the advice! i took it on-board and got ordered in a pair of Projecta BT-820 Neg + Pos ;)

Since the Terminals already have entries for auxiliary lines, i wont need those lugs (which i had plans to use as i had them readily available at work)

For the Battery, the boys at work help me achieve to find and order a a 390cca Century Battery to suit :)

I have all the gauge wiring to suit at work aswell so i am all good there too.

I will most likely replace the earth from the battery-to-body with the thicker wiring i have there but, still am tossing up between replacing the positive wiring which passes down to the Alternator and Starter.

Those will definitely be on the next of things to do aswell as, i can get the ARB Compressor and Pump-up Kit as well for Staff Price ;)

Mine used to do this all the time. In the end I adjusted the throttle stop so that the tickover was just about 1000rpm. It still dips but not enough to start the belt squealing.

+1 Just gotta keep it tight. Probably will be knackering the bearing on the end of the water pump on mine it's that tight. And I carry a spare.

Your fuel consumption does sound a bit high. I get 400+ on every tank. Are you running 95? I put 91 in a couple of times before I realised it was supposed to have 95 minimum and I got crap ecomomy from 91, and it pinked like a mofo on hot days.
