Hi guys hopefully someone knows where my problem's at. About 2 years ago i did an engine conversion on my SJ70 WT -> G16B vitara engine, and it's been sweet since. However, driving into work in it on Monday it started losing a lot of power when the REV are under 2.6k rpm. I.e. I'll be doing 60km/h on a flat, put it into 4th gear revs drop to 2K and I'll put my foot down a bit and the engine will sound sick (like it's running on 3 cylinders or something) and it won't get much power until revs = 2.6k-2.7k and then bam, off I go, everything sounds and feels great. So far I've checked all my leads, removed and cleaned my plugs (they're only about a month old), but that's it. It still idlling fine at around 700rpm - 800rpm. Any suggestions or ideas appreciated.

Hey mate, the new ones were Bosch super plus cheapies. Not sure on the exact model off the top of my head F###DC+ I think. 8mm gap. From memory Bosch use the same plug for the G16A as well? I don't have the oldies either, but I did buy some bosch platinum plugs to test this morning. I'll see how they go.

That's something I hadn't considered... I'll check this tonight, although if it had skipped a tooth I would think that the issue would be consistent at any RPM, wouldn't it?

Hey BlueSuzy, sorry mate. I must've been off somewhere else when I wrote first post. It's actually an ex Vitara engine, not Baleno (AFAIK). So yeah, no coil pack.

Mmm, dizzy cap was my next move. Damn. I changed the plugs tonight without any joy. Will have to wait till the weekend to check timing. I want to check leads too. Have you done that Dazza?
It seems to happen mostly under load. I.e. going down a hill is okay, but going up one, or hill starting and you're gonna have a bad time.

Plugs/leads were to be my next step as well. Just out of curiosity do you have check engine light displayed? Mine has, and a wild stab here I am thinking o2 sensors faulty? Seems to be chewing through the fuel a little to. It's exactly same diagnosis as your car, misfiring under load and up to around 2800rpm then clears and takes off like a dog shot in the ass! My timing belt was replaced around 15,000kms ago so I am not really thinking timing issue....yet

Hmm, no check engine light for me... But that could well be due to my hack wiring job...
I had another play last night. Changed out my plugs and replaced the battery (long shot), and still no good. However I also had a fiddle with the sensors and the injector plugs... wiggled em around and removed a couple of easy access ones and cleaned them up a bit. Started her up and went for a quick run and it actually seems worse than before now. Hahaha, I guess that's progress?

check fuel filter. Mine got water in it ages back and when under load it would cut out something terrible, granted a G16A though

Thanks for the suggestion Jerry. I have an RDO tomorrow so I'll take a look and see how I go. It hasn't rained here in a while, but I suppose it could be clogged up anyway.

Hi Dazza, just wondering if you managed to solve this? I've been over in NZ for the past 2 weeks so haven't had a chance to try anything yet.

Yes I did bud! Changed plugs, leads, rotor button/dizzy cap, also pulled maf sensor and cleaned that after finding wrong air filter (bit short doesnt seal airbox properly). Running fine now.
