A motorbike cop pulled alongside me today and said my exhaust was illegal because it points out the side.

I've got a 91 WT Sierra with a vit 1.6. I had a 2" exhaust put on years ago that was straight out the back but fumes were bad so I had it changed to point out the side.

The thing is, I'm pretty sure it pointed out the side originally.

Anyone know what's standard and what's legal.

The rule used to be that you could have an exhaust exit the side of a vehicle 40mm past the rearward most opening window.... which on a soft top sierra, is the tailgate. It must exit on the passengers side and face down at a particular angle ( which I cannot recall ).

Given that the OEM sierra exhaust points to the side, I would have told him to go hit google images up before he shoots his mouth off next time.

The way I read this is that your exhaust points out side before tailgate which is not legal. If that is the case be happy that he was good enough to warn you and not give you a defect notice.

Cop must be pretty switched on and know his ADR's

10.1.2 the exhaust outlet, if to the side of the vehicle,
must discharge to the right hand side of the vehicle and
downwards at an angle to the horizontal of not less than
15 degrees and not more than 45 degrees; and

This rule I believe is to protect pedestrians on the side-walk from fumes/backfires etc. Beats me how vehicles can be approved or imported with exhaust discharging from the left hand-side when they obviously violate the ADR above.....

Have a look at your compliance plate. Does say it meets ADR10?

thericho, where does your exhaust exit? From your description it sounds like it's the same location as stock, in which case the copper is wrong.

Did he defect you for it?

You are right Damo, it needs to be clarified, I read it as out the side like in front of the back wheel but as you say out the side could actually be out the back then pointing sideways like a stock exhaust.

Sorry guys - to clarify it sticks out the back, a touch further than the tailgate, exiting left, passenger side, with a slight downward inclination at the end.
Copper just gave me warning, I said it exited left when it was stock but didn't push it because there were other things he could have called me on. Just wondering because I prefer it like that and don't want to change unless necessary.

Thats close enough to where the OEM pipe exits for it to be a non-issue.

The cop may be right when applying the rules to any old car, but in this instance, he was/is wrong, as that is the OEM position.

Your exhaust looks fine i reckon, if you want to be real picky the stock one in pic does end up exhausting slightly backwards but yours is pretty close to standard exhaust direction. Print that standard pic and keep in your car in case he pulls you over again.

Does it have a number plate light? Is it just blurred out with the plate?
He coulda done you on that if not. Red reflectors on the back?

I suspect you are right with the there being other things he could have spotted in a 30 second walkaround.

I had my exhaust moved to point out the LH side with a slight pitch down because the fumes were putting us asleep, the guy who welded the new tail pipe section on said its always been illegal to point any exhaust to the nature strip/foot path. I can see this being a good argument at main roads with OEM specs.

it's luck of the draw & i'm guessing the OP getting away without a defect was simply due to passing the simple attitude test.
