You'll need to get yourself another ball bearing.

The other rod has a dimple in it for the ball, move te other rod around till the ball sits back in further. Next, I sit the (currently out) rod partially in, put the other spring loaded ball in and with 3 hand push the ball in the hole, hold the case and move the rod through and back to position. Done!

Another trick for anyone else to get the ball to depress (provided it's still in there and you want to switch between positions the fork can rest in) is to rotate the fork (this is easy) which pushes the ball back in, slide, rotate back, much easier than pushing it really hard!

It wasnt the ball on the other side were you rotate the shifter and push in. It was the other ball what has the litlle spring under it. I had to push the other shifter right in, push the ball in with a screw driver while holding the shift fork in the hole and gave it a tap with a mallet.

Yeh I worked that out, just thought I'd put the info here for the next poor bastard who gets stuck :p

Good to see you worked it out though, sometimes it's okay to use the persuader!

Is there a special way to get the gearstick bush in past the pins?

IIRC if it's the lowrange one, there's two slots on it, put them down on the pins then it should flip over in there. It just rolls around the pins. Then just turn it sideways and put the shifter back in!

Nah was from 4wd products of ebay. Was hard as a rock. So had to neally demolish it to get it past the pins.
