It's probably been brought up but can you put a auto behind a twin cam? And if so whats involved.
also what sort gearing would i need? I have 6.5s and 31s now. Oh and it's for sierra ute.

This is 2nd hand info.
I have been informed the GTI ecu runs different signals to g16b/g13bb and makes using the electronic auto very difficult. Maybe wait until JrZook finishes his thread on working out the aw4 input signals etc.

But a 3 speed would work with a lucky 13 adapter, once gearing is addressed.

Ok so vitara 4 speed auto is electronic but not 3speed? And with adaptor plate it will bolt up? Are autos easy enough to get?
Thanks for the input guys

3 speeds seem to be fairly rare ATM, judging by the difficulty some have had tracking one down. 4 speeds are electronic, 3 speeds aren't.

I'm not in a rush so something mite pop up. Are they normally a good box? Just need to figure what the gearing will be like.

They're a GM box and by all accounts not as good as the 4 speed. It's definitely the easier conversion tho

I don't have much experience with the g13b (GTi) but I have a fair amount of experience with the three speed auto and I'm not sure I'd recommend one behind a GTi motor.

The trimatic three speed runs a 2.54:1 first gear and, AFAIK, a 1.8:1 converter ratio. First gear feels quite tall with the trimatic. With the bottom end torque of a 1.6' this isn't a big problem with the less bottom end torque and a steeper power curve in the GTi, I think drivability would be a bit soft.

It might be fin to play with a higher stall speed in the converter, but this could get a bit hit and miss.

By comparison, the AW-4 has a 2.95:1 first gear and a looser converter with more torque multiplication- I think they are 2.2 or 2.4 converter ratio. It's an excellent offroad auto.

Trimatics are strong and reliable- they can get a bit leaky around the TV cable, but its no big deal, and being 100% mechanical/vacuum, they are very simple. They can be rebuilt to take lots of abuse. Get the stall speed right and it will work fine.

I'll add that if you are planning road driving, It can be very hard to gear a trimatic in a Sierra, not a problem off road though, and I don't think your car sees the freeway.

Steve.

Why doesn't anyone consider the non-elec OD AW4? Everyone gets scared off by the electrical side of things, but doesn't bother to check if the SAME gearbox as fitted to a dozen other cars may be suitable??

Mid 90's Pajero. Serial code 03-72L, is a manually shifted 4speed variant of the AW4. A G16B auto bellhousing will bolt straight up. A simple adaptor needs to be made to run the sierra transfer, and there may be some considerations to be made with respect to flywheel and convertor, but this mayso the case with the G13b.

No arguments there from me Fatzook, I just haven't heard of anyone who has obviously done it.

I have no need for it, but given the price of pajero parts of that vintage, I may just buy one to prove the point.

Ok some good info. I'm not at all scared of electrics i just no gti management wouldn't play with tcm info. I do 60kms a day on a highway but i need to keep the crawl ratio i have now. I have a well built g13b so it mite have half a chance with the poor first gear ratio? But what sort of rpm on the hwy ? As far as a auto from a pajero v6 model or diesel??

Theres a thread on Zukwharrie where a bloke details everything needed to do the pajero box swap. Only issue was it comes in 2 variants of input splines so not all of the pajero boxes swap.

I think the code is actually 03-72L, as the "E" signifies electronic shifting and the "L" is for lockup torque converter.

And as Gwagon outlined, they are less than ideal for a vehicle driven both on, and off-road.
