4x4 applications.... Lets look at another perspective, how long do you reckon a G series engine would last with the abuse of drift/track/racing compared to the "weak" ca18?? 4wd applications do not exist for these motors! so you can't really compare them. Weaker is the word! There not a bad donk, sr is simply better G16B has the highest failure rate for head testing of any motor to come from Japan. This comes from a engine builder not me! So I'd say not well in comparison to a ca or sr And once again both are not suited to a zook

power in an offroading car is pretty pointless if your geared right.
i run an engine with less that 20kw but im damb sure i havent found anything to stop it yet.

sorry i disagree. my old mans LJ50 was unstopable on dunes, used to literally drive circles around powerful cars on sand blows on frazer.

Tanshi Ive seen both you and waynes 2 smokes struggle in some areas (not many at all) where wheel speed is required, where you require a higher gear but the poor lil donk just doesn't have to torque to pull it because its not revving to near infinity Theoretically you could gear it way down like 1000:1 and use pedal power if its a high traction surface and doesn't require dynamic wheel speed or response.

not any more. i now have that little bit more torque with elec ignition and in those limited positions (mud and loose sand)i can use 3rd gear.
my point was as above that power (in big amounts) which is what i meant is pointless.
the only reason i can see needing power is to go fast.

You'd be talking about greasy clay slopes then! That's Annette's weakness for sure. With 6.5s, 4.8 diffs and 32's 1st and 2nd are too low but 3rd is too tall. With power under the skinny pedal it probably wouldn't matter. Other than the greasy slopes though it doesn't matter anyhow. (having only 20 kw that is)

The CA sump was not shallow at all, it was probably just as big as the G13a sump actually. The reason why CA's copped such a bad rap with oil problems was due to the oil gallery design in the head not allowing it to flow back into the sump. However this only happens when at high rpm for a sustained period of time. It also happens to the RB series. There are fixes for it. Cuzz you may just have a bad rap with spinning bearings, I swear you've spun more bearings that I have had hot dinners. I would say that a CA motor is a great engine in a Zook (even if non turbo), if you could keep the driveline up to it. It was the best fun in the sand, felt like you were driving a boat and coming up on the plane. It could easily eat Tcases, uni joints, springs, diffs, axles for lunch. I drove it like a pussy but still managed to break shit when I was negligent. It was good fun while it lasted and I was proud I made it happen, however I am after reliability now, and without spending a shit tonne on turning the Zook away from being a Zook I had to opt for something larger. I can now tow more, use less fuel (and less expensive fuel), go further, take the Mrs. Yes I may get stuck more in ruts or have to winch more often, however you can't even get to ruts when your cars parked in the shed broken....

I can think of at least one other engine that does this for a fact, so not just a CA problem, just a thrashing your car problem.

Re Brenno's post- that's the big difference. I can absolutely hate on my driveline in VIC conditions with my g16b. I know my driveline wouldn't take twice the torque, and that would take me away from a siuzuki based driveline. In any case, more torque would only mean taller gearing and more wheel speed, which is rarely all that helpful.
Steve.

Hmm. Silvia's did come in an auto non turbo, the cheapest most unpopular type. Not that I ever plan on doing this, but for discussion's sake is there any reason that couldn't be put into a zook.

in all honesty im not sure why you would put a ca18 in unless you were doing a ca18det. for the extra work a J20a will fit much better and have similar power to a ca18de

None at all. Transfer would have to move back though unless you could work out how to build a hybrid case auto with a CA bell and vitara guts/case- his kind of makes it an LWB proposition only AFAIK, Not impossible I think, but tough. I think tanshi is right though, a j20 would make more sense unless you went ca18det.

in the turbo g13b thread there was talk about using the engine & aw4 auto from the kia sportage... would still rather a zook engine, just so you don't have that stigma of running kia bits.

Myself and a couple of others investigated this, the problem is the FE-DOHC/FE3 motor has a cast iron block which isn't ideal, especially if its going to be engineered as these a big weight increase when combined with the auto. As far as dimensions go it looked to be a good fit, and kia's come up quite cheap. I believe the CA engines are all cast iron blocks too. A Suzuki motor is the best donor, theyre all alloy so wont affect the balance of the car too much, and its nice to keep it all Suzuki.
