Not sure if VSI 20 is still current but in answers to common questions (Jan 2000) under Q11 it states:

Q11: Doors - My four wheel drive has removable doors, can i leave them off when driving?
A: VicRoads strongly recommends against this practice, particularly when the vehicle is used on the road. However, if seatbelts are fitted the vehicle may be used without the doors fitted.

I guess the two areas that might fault this is if this has been superseded but I am not sure how to find that out and what defines "removable" ie is needing screwdriver ok? If you cut your hinges neatly I suppose you could argue that they came like that and then it is a tool less exercise

I am not suggesting no doors is the best idea on the hwy, but if they arent required I suppose it opens up the possibility making our own half doors that just need to comply with the hinges and latching requirements to be legal

Removable is pretty well only applicable to cars with canvas doors, and jeeps which have the slip-off hinges.

using a tool to remove them doesn't make them removable =) if you applied that logic any car has removable doors!

It doesnt state that it has to be done without any tools in that document. The fact that suzuki use philips screws and have external hinges should go a long way to prove that they were designed to be easily removed.
If there are any suzuki manuals that reference door removal I think that would also be very helpful.

Annoyingly, that document doesn't really clarify anything.... And we go around in circles again.

The engineer we are working with says no, so that looks like a no. The conversations I've had with friendly police officers about running doorless was along the lines that a less friendly officer wouldn't care what you said, they'd defect the car and let you sort it out.
