Just wondering if an Alternator from a 05-08 Grand Vitara with a H27a motor will fit in an older H25a Grand Vitara.


First gen Alts are only 70amp where as the later ones are 115amp.

They look the same and have similar plugs and so....

Has anyone tried one?


Be an easy upgrade if it did.

Is it the same alt. as the 98-05 h27a? Would be sweet if it could fit.

Looks the same but may be slightly different with the brackets.....Be nice to find out. Might try the wreckers for a price on one.

It's possible, I run an XL7 alt in the LJ.
But then I did make brackets for it.

SQ625 alt is 70amp
XL7 alt is 95amp
05-08 alt is 105-115 amp

there are several different options out there but the above outputs are what I found.

The FSM I have shows the XL-7 as having a 105A alternator, the SQ625 should be an 85A, and the SQ420 should be the 70A

Be careful with the 05+ alternators - they are ECU controlled - the ECU monitors power consumption via a shunt in the main fuse panel and adjusts the alternator output accordingly. I'm not saying they can't be used, in theory if the connection to the ECU fails they will self regulate, but the connections are going to be different.

My alternator shit itself tonight up at glasshouse What's the best alt. I can bolt straight in? Xl7?

Is it getting oil in it from your mega leaks, or mud related?

Leak is on the otherside of the engine... It's because my mate told me to hit a mud hole and it was over the bonnet... Lucky could reverse out and then the battery light came on. Had to get towed home because battery completely died.

Tyr flooding the alt with a garden hose...... And if you can get it started I should even wash it out of the windings

Already hit it with the gerny at the car wash last night, I can start her up just has to be jumped. Won't run too long though before it dies again.

Is there a way to check if it's charging the battery up?

EDIT: Did you have any luck putting in an xl7 alt b4t?

If it dies whilst the battery lights is on then that is a pretty reliable sign the battery isn't being charged. If you wanted to double-check put a multimeter across the battery terminals. You should see 13.8-14.4V at just above idle speed. BTW your battery will possibly need replacing as they typically won't last after a couple of deep discharges.

Cheers, will check it tomorrow. Thinking maybe the battery couldn't charge fast enough to meet the power needs whilst the battery is that low.

Will get the battery checked too, i have the 2yr warranty on the century battery so shouldn't be an issue if it's stuffed.

FYI the Century warranty will not cover over discharging your battery causing it to fail.

Does the alt. need a certain amount of battery left for it to work? Charging up the battery now so we'll see how it goes.

Xl7 alternator looks exactly the same as the gv so if it's stuffed ill get one of those.

Charged the battery up, starts no worries. Does the battery light come on if the alternator is faulty? Mine is still on even though the battery is fully charged.

Ordered an XL7 Alternator so hopefully get that in this week.

Light staying on would indicate the alternator is faulty. Did you check voltage output with a multimeter? A multimeter will determine if the battery is being charged.

Oh yeah I did that too, it just sits on 12.8volts so I'm guessing it's not working because it should be 13.5+
