So guys,

I know this is probably a random question but i was wondering if anyone knew of anyone that produces a "Mini spool" for a Suzuki jimmy. Im just after one for the type of driving I'm doing and would prefer a constantly locked rear than an auto locker as I'm not really into the whole "locking-unlocking" thing. Just after a constant locked rear.

So if anyone could help me out would be much appreciated.

A Sierra mini spool will fit. A Jimny uses the same rear diff centre as a Sierra. Don't get a Trail Gear one, they're weak. Trail Tough is the one to get I believe.

FWIW I've got a pretty well setup auto locker and aside from the extra play it creates I have no issues with it at all.

PS - to provide some facts, search the photos of them. TG's are much more cheaply made and weren't/arent, as far as I am aware, heat treated.

Okay perfect. Thanks for the help. One more question though, is the sierra known as the "sidekick" over in America? And is there any year model sierra I should be aiming for or are they all the same centre?

Sidekick is a Vitara. Sierra is a Samurai.

1l Sierra diffs are different but APIO is the only mob who makes mini spools for them so you need some amazingly bad luck to accidentally buy one of those.

Just want to check that a sierra mini spool will Infact fit a jimny rear diff. I'm about to order one finally and just thought I should double check.

I know jimny 4.1 rears are weak as p iss even unlocked
Maybe rethink the spool concept i have sold 4 lwb sierra centers to replace jimny rears in the last couple years as they seem to be made a little better

I advocate an auto locker over a minispool. I've never driven a minispool, but when my locker was new it would sometimes not unlock and feel like how a spool would be on road. Yuck!

Just my opinion however.

There's nothing wrong with a spooled diff. 100% predictable. I've driven on an auto locker and would much rather drive a spool than an auto locker. Just my opinion.

Did you daily drive it Steve?

I assume because its a Jimny its not a dedicated off road rig. Hence there might be an element of daily driving. Having the tires skip every tight corner seems like an expensive way to daily drive to me, and a PITA in car parks.


I'm glad there's a choice in between (price wise) a spool and an air locker.

I'd take my old minispool over the lockrite any day of the week. Even daily driving.
If tyre pressures are correct, it's barely noticeable onroad.

I managed to perform the "exploding trail-gear trick" and create the 7 piece spool - definitely go with a trail tough.
Sierra one definitely fits a jimny rear.

I guess it comes down to preference then.

I honestly can't fault the auto locker off road. Road it is bearable IMO, and I spend a reasonable amount of time in the car each day. I can honestly say I almost stuffed the spider gears back in there a few times in the first two months though.

I've been running a welded rear for years now, not by choice I can tell you. The car's no daily and even then it's not so good, not a problem at speed but around slow streets and car parks it's all bind, chirp skip. Flogs out suspension bushes, transfer mounts, twists axles. The Lockrights it replaced (broke 2) were pretty funky but I preferred them. Hope to finish putting in the air lockers and test drive it today, expecting these to be better. IMO if you're going spooled rear just get an old Sierra diff and remove the side gears, weld the voids between the teeth, as in fill 2 leave 2 then put them in the rear and see for yourself if you like it, at least if it sucks as bad as I say it hasn't cost anything and you can spend the money you save on a Lockright or China/ Airlocker. Wasn't Joeblow creating something?
