So I decided to try on the wheels and tyres I have, merely in order to learn for myself where the scrubbing points etc are, therefore what needs to be trimmed etc.

So what I have fitted is a set of 15x7's (i think), with a pair of Kuhmo 235 75 15's on the front, and 31's on the back.
Surprisingly, the gearing didn't seem all that bad to me (although instantly noticeable, and I have only tried high gearing so far), and normal driving on road seemed fine. No noise or scrubbing at all. However a definite oversteer was present, obviously aided by the difference in tyre size front to rear.
I did take it shortly off road, and that was where the scrubbing started, both front and rear. By the look of it, the standard trimming of the front bumper and perhaps the guards should fix up the front, however a downsize from the huge 31's on the back will be required.

But all in all - a great day of learning!

This is with the 235 fronts and 31 rears.
Before this, I really was set on going pretty big.
Now I think I've realised that smaller may indeed be better for me, and the 215 option suggested is looking pretty good.

Had a little more of a play tonight just on my property, and wow the difference!
Gearing doesn't actually seem too bad in low (as in a don't have to ride the clutch to crawl).
There are a couple of little (I mean LITTLE) hills on my property that were a challenge with standard tyres. The one pictured below I have never actually made it up in standard form - I know it looks tiny in the photo, but it is quite steep and soft close to the vertical wall.
With the new tyres, no problem. Straight up, no loss of traction. Was almost boring. Haha.
So now I might swing back to 235's.... Haha. Sorry guys! It's all just too much fun!

Prolly more due to the aggressive tread than the size of the tyre... plus if you did it at the same RPM with 31's fitted that you did with 205's fitted you'd be going about 20% faster =)

Very true, Alien. I was unsure of diff clearance as well as flex scrubbing (as I am very new to this) so took it all very very slow, hopping out where I could to see how everything was reacting. Today really has been a great learning curve in regards to how everything operates in use, and I certainly feel a lot more familiar with the smaller characteristics of the vehicle.

give it another crack with the small tyres, and go a bit faster... (20% if you can figure it out) - i'll bet it drives up just the same as with the bigger tyres.

When you were in 4 low you didn't have the front hubs locked in did you?

With two different sized tyres on the axles the transfer case is going to be getting a lot of bind up because the rear axle is trying to drive further than the front with every revolution.

I was a little worried about that, and wasn't sure if it was going to put a lot more strain on drive components. No, not locked. (To be honest, I didn't know I could lock them)

having you a 2002 jimmy it would be heaps easier to get a transfer case gearing than for a newer model jimmy. And if you are able to do the job yourself the parts are not really that expensive. You only need the swap kit from ORA, and to find a WT -tcase in good nick,... or restore an ok one

from memory of what I was looking for, with a sierra wt t-case swap you will be almost spot on on 235's on high, but your low would be more similar to running 215's on stock jimmy case.

if you get 4.9 gears on it, the high would be bit over geared. (easier to drive but more revvy.... just don't remember if it was with 235's or 30's that worked best)... and of course low gear would be loooooooooooooooooow

Ok great! Although I do most work on my cars myself, I think I'd leave a transfer case swap to a professional - just don't want to risk it.
How much should I be paying for a WT case normally? I am considering going to 235's for now, and then once I start finding more time to get out wheeling (and of course save some funds), then I will do the transfer case.
