From what I've read, the gear set from a 1.3l gearbox will drop into a maruti gearbox. Not only does it give you a 20% higher top gear (0.8:1 vs 1:1) but you also get a lower first (3.652:1 vs 3.136) so it's win-win really. I don't think a 1l would like pulling that 5th though. Benchai (I think) did it and made a thread on it but I can't find it!

Yeah, his thread was for LJs though, (said thread is here viewtopic.php?f=17&t=12322&hilit=auto )different kettle of fish if you wana keep the linkage shifter. Someone did one a few months ago with a type 3 1l (same process as a Maruti) and I'm pretty sure it was Benchai but I can't find anything.

From what I can see there is no evidence that anyone exited the passenger side of the vehicle there is no scuff marks or paint wear on the inner sill, bottom of the door etc, Trust me I will sort the speed out however I don't want to butcher the under the bonnet appearance yet as it very tidy

Out of interest I wonder if the air filter has been replace in all those years? Could be a rats nest or something in there haha.

if it's only ever putted around a vineyard, it's probably gummed up the exhaust or the secondaries are stuck... as mentioned above it could be a number of things, start with the basics like checking if it's getting full throttle.

Well I was told the vehicle was serviced every mth regardless of the k's ...thats 300 odd k's a mth however it was on a vineyard property so it would have been stop start ... I will check the air-cleaner though... was disappointed that there were no Reds under the seats

I had no machining to do to drop the gears from a 5sp into the type 3 4sp case. I've heard it said though that it needs to be done, so whether the Maruti 4sp is different to the type 3 I'm not sure. Mine has no problems whatsoever cruising in 5th from as little as 60kph.
I had a problem I couldn't resolve for some time where mine would just die at 4000rpm, then pick up when I took my foot off the gas. Could repeat it reliably all day and it turned out to be a mud wasp nest in the intake hose the body side of the airbox. It had sat stuck to the side for quite a while, then finally fell off suddenly and caused this inexplicable problem.

It must have sat for some time cause before we started the trip there were no holes in the exhaust it was tarnished anodised and very clean... when we arrived the secondary muffler had blown out in several places and all the pipe work was full of holes... the only thing left intact is the catalytic converter ... only wish it had of fallen off ...spose there may be a restriction in it. Has anyone had better performance by use headers and a larger exhaust? Because before I go anywhere I'LL need to do something about it.

Your tyres look to be over sized. That would make it quite sluggish, and also put your speedo out, meaning you are actually going faster than 80 kph. Here is my 95 when it was stock. Possibly cleaner than yours? You can see a noticable difference in the profile of your tyres to mine.

Try a tune up, new fuel filter, new air filter, spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor button, also ensure you are getting full throttle at the carbie, also they have a little mesh filter inside the carbie where fuel line goes in, check timing and ensure distributor is advancing properly when revving.

I have owned 5 w/t marutis all under 100,000kms and they are gutless as hell. Extractors, remove the throttle stop under the accelerator, check carb gets full throttle when accel is flat, change air filter, advance timing, 2" exhaust and then after all that effort realise that 30kw of 1ltr grunt just doesnt cut it. Just weld some 1.3 engine mounts in (5 mins) and bolt in the 1.3 ltr and 5spd box all tailshafts ect... fit without mods. With the maruti gearing top speed will still be quite low and rev heaps but you will have more power and an extra 2500 rpm to play with over the 1ltr which dies at 5500-6000 max

This is a project that was suppose to take a few weekends but due to many other projects it got put on the back burner...my hopes are registration in a few weeks then a mild 75mm lift, wheels and extractors...as far as the engine goes I might upgrade it to a M15a after I get the rest of the mods done

Upgrading to 245/75/16 tyres and rims sould get you more top speed which you will definately want without sucking massive power the 1ltr gearing handles tyre upgrade better than the 1.3 does. If going an m series motor you would be silly not to go the m18 for more power same work. Only suzistore has done mseries engine into sierra in perth and its prob gunna push 7-8k if your paying someone to do it.

I've found the terrain you're driving through makes a huge difference and I'm not just talking about hills. Due to the Suzuki's craptacular aerodynamics the smallest amount of wind can knock a lot off your top speed (or so I've found).
Case in point... the trip south of Perth to Bunbury. The newish extension to the Freeway through to where it joins the Old Coast road is relatively flat and has very little in the way of wind breaks (trees and scrub bordering the road) - it's mostly open farmland. On one trip down south this stretch had me screaming the tits off my Zook in 4th just to make 80km/hr. As soon as I hit the Old Coast Road where there's plenty of trees and scrub higher than the car close to the road, it would quite happily do 110km/hr - I've got a 96 WT SWB Sierra with a soft top (which I believe acts as a spiniker during strong winds, I've been known to plan trips around wind speed and direction), 1.3L, 5 speed, extractors, 2" exhaust with a 1 3/4" dumper section at the end and running 215/75/15 tyres (no gearing).
I swear there must also be the slightest rise for the whole length of that boring as batshit road... going south is nearly always a bit of a push for the zook, coming back not as bad... Cross winds bring a rapid tightening of the sphincter but with a strong tailwind I get to feel like a speed demon overtaking all the grey nomad caravans and land barges hauling their sea barges...
If the 600k's were out the Goldfields way, the lack of substantial road-side scrub/trees and the smallest hint of wind might not be helping... Try all the cheaper options the guys here have suggested... Then get the bigger engine...
