Hi

Looking into what actual sizes are of the following:

Silverstone MT117 Extreme 31/10.5 R15 and 33/10.5 R15 and R16

Asking because I know there's quite a difference between R15 and R16 in 35" versions.

Can anyone help out here?

Have a set in 31/10.5r15 ... such a cute little tyre ...
Back at the old place atm and can't recall actual measurements right now, but I do recall they are the same size as a near bald 30/9.5r15 hankook muddy, and a good 1/2 inch lower than 31/10.5 bridgestone 604v desert duelers.
For shits and giggles one day I mounted one on a stock Vitara rim.
Having seen a few of them, I'd suggest that the writing on the sidewall is strictly for their own catalogue listing, and has no relevance to actual dimensions.

Sorry, they were 31's. I had another set of 31x10.5R15's that measured 30.3" but they weren't new when I measured them (they came on a car). They seem to change size from batch to batch.

31's - 31.7

I do believe the 33's are a new mould though as the designs seems to have been slightly improved

I think you'll find the column on the right quite accurate having had 31's, 33's & 35's. Previously their site listed the 33x10.5's as somewhere about 820. Back before the 9.5's were available

781mm is 30.7 (ish) btw

Just measured. 29.9" on 7" rim at 16 psi.
Tread 99% ... pimples still just visible.

That list is pretty much useless.
Measured my buddy's 31/10.5 R16 yesterday. New tyres, only done a few miles. Measured around 29.9" with 25 psi.

Also the width on this list is way off. Same 31's R16 are more like 235mm wide.

I think we can conclude that Silverstone 31's generally are smaller than listed as. But that it also differs from batch to batch.

Oddly with Simex it's the other way around.

Silverstone were the ones that measures small. It's Simex (the design Silverstone copied) that the 31's measure 32.something - I had Simex 31's and this was certainly the case.

Have owned 31x10.5 and they were small, close to 30x9.5. Also had 33x9.5 and they were pretty much spot on.

I asked my local 4x4 shop for 32" Simex ET's. He told me they measured something like 33.5". So a no go for me

That said, they're a pretty shit tyre in anything other than utter slop. I HATED mine when i had them... they got me into trouble SO many times with next to no lateral grip (ie: on a cross slope, you slide down it while driving either forward or backward).

Yes pretty much.

I've been running Insa Turbo Special Track for 4 years now. Simex copy. But still. Excellent tyre. Must be a reason why they've been so popular for years.

No lateral grip? I couldn't disagree more. The lateral grip is in my experience excellent.

Sounds more like you're talking about Boggers than Simex ET's. Because Boggers are shit in anything else but mud and has no lateral grip at all.

I ran the 32*9.5 (33.4 actual) for years.
Grip in vic mud and clay they were fantastic.
On side slopes, road and wet rock they sucked

Tom, your experience of lateral grip with the Insa might be due (in part) to the carcass. Silverstone's are bias ply IIRC, which generally erodes lateral stability, whilst your Insa's would have been based on a radial carcass.

Having said that, the increased flexibility of the tread in a bias ply tyre generally makes them superior for off road work.

I would agree with JDK's assessment, although I haven't run them myself.

I loved my 32x9.5 Simex Extremes, they were awesome in mud and did well on rocks considering they are predominantly a mud tyre. Even won a couple rock comps thanks to them.
