Hey, just wondering if there were any key tips to changing the gearbox oil.

I have an 89 sierra if that makes any difference.

Ok let me elaborate, I haven't done it before and it looks awkward. I have no photo guides, and the shitty drawings in the car manual aren't exactly crystal clear. Do I need any specific tools like a funnel etc? Is there a process to it or anything specific?

Or is it simply drain and re-fill

It helps to take it for a drive first to warm up the oil - it drains a bit easier this way. Tke out the drain plus and the fill/level plug and let the oil drain out completely.

As mentioned above, its pretty important to replace the drain plug once its finished draining...

Gearbox fill plugs can be awkward to pour oil into. Some sort of siphon pump is often handy, or do what I did last time and squirt it in from a (clean) dishwashing liquid bottle. Fill it just to the level of the plug.

Put the fill plug back in, then drive it away!

Just in case plan....undo the filler first. I always to this just in case you drain the oil and can't fill it up Its not a good look.

You will need a 3/8 drive rachet or a 10mm square drive to un-do the plugs. You will also need some kind of syringe or similar to get the oil back in. You can't just simply pour the oil back in.

Something like this is ideal

sorry for the hijack, but I also wanted to ask the guys about this.

I did my diffs and T/Case and G/box last weekend and I found that the 3/8" square drive plugs are all chewed out.

Does anyone know of any replacement plugs for the Zook?

Is there a separate oil fill spot for the low range section?
I think I may be looking at the wrong section of the car. How far down is the gear box fill point, if underneath the car?

The transfer case and gearbox are seperate, if that is what you mean. The fill plug should be on the side of the gearbox, underneath the car.

Another point thats worth noting: gearbox oil stinks, so it pays not to make a mess while you are doing this.

The reason I was checking the oil is because the other day it was stuck in reverse, as the screw the gear stick pivots off had sheared. I replaced that, and it seems to be working, except that now its making a noise, that seems to be coming from the gearbox. Just checked the oil level in the box and its full.

So now I'm stumped as to what the noise is?

Any ideas?

Reckon I can drive on it?

Couldnt find it. I may have cleaned it out.

I think the noise is coming from the clutch plate. Cause like I said, the noise only happens when clutch is out. I also havnt put the cover back on, so there nothing insulating the noise.....

So maybe clutch release bearing or input shaft bearing. Change oil as planned and see what happens

There really isn't anything wrong with the square drive ones, when you use a 10mm square drive socket. It's a worthwhile investment to get one.

I use 3/8th, yes you run a risk but most time's you'll get em out, depends on how tight they have been done up..
