how do you get your gearbox in with a welded crossmember, i really dont want to pull the engine out??

got the exact same problem i managed to get it out but after 3 hrs i cant get it back in

by taking the clutch plate off but thats not very handy when the new clutch is in

what is it? lada niva, sierra, vitara, GV, jimny, hilux, pootrol?

haha....takes me 30 minutes in and out.



use your brains kids. take the g/box mount off. having someone who can 'tilt' the engine for you is handy. basically, feed the rear of the box over the c/member, rotate the gearbox a little (clockwise from memory), get someone to tilt the motor if need be and slide forwards.........simple.

ive done it afew times now and its a prick of a job. its alot easier if you can get a helper. The way i do it is:

Remove the rear mount completely and have the gear stick out with a rag in the hole. (sorry to state the obvious)

Then i put the rear of the box in over the cross member as far as i can get it with the front of the box pointing towards the driver side wheel.

Then with alot of cursing and twisting and trying different angles etc, the box slips in. This can take abit of time to get it to work so 2 people makes it easier to share the work.
It can also help sometimes to have someone pull on the front of the motor as it will be hanging back abit on the mounts.

Then its just a matter of sliding in onto the clutch (which you have already made sure is lined up with the flywheel etc). Its handy to have a length of wood or something to help hold the box up.

I dont know if all Sierras have it but mine has a spacer plate thing that goes between the motor and gear box. Dont do what i did and forget about it till the end and have to separate everything to make it fit!

well this has answered my post to at least i know im not the only one having trouble will have another crack tommorrow any one know how much oil the box takes(sorry about the hijack)

hi, Where in Ipswich are you? Transfer case takes 0.8Ltr of oil according to manual.
Hey give me a call I can offer some advice on getting Gearbox in or out a bit quicker.

Suzi store have abit of info on their site about how much oil etc.

They say 1.3ltrs for the gearbox but i dont know how accurate it is.

The first time I did a clutch it took me ages then I worked out it is all in the rotation of the box You spin it around on it's side.
