I have a mill/drill which takes MT3 arbor. I have a 13mm Jacobs keyless chuck (decent one) which I put a holesaw arbor in as I was using a 54mm holesaw. So I drilled my holes no dramas, but when I came to undo the chuck, the bastard thing was TIGHT.

Short of going at it with multigrips how the hell do I get the bastard thing undone????

I can get the chuck out of the mill (give the drawbar a whack), i just cant undo the chuck so I can get the holesaw out.

I could, but I don't want to mess up my chuck using multigrips on it!!!

Maybe some alloy or copper shim wrapped around it would protect it?

it's gonna look bad in 5 years time anyways... :p you could try a cloth... or search you tube....there are tips on ones with keys...couldnt see anything for keyless...bit of a silly idea IMO except on a hand drill

I have a feeling these chucks tighten as you use them, and the leverage a holesaw gives is why it is SO tight.

Did some more Googling, aparantly the way to go is hold it in a vice with soft jaws, then use a strap wrench to undo.

WTF is a strap wrench, yeah, I asked the same thing.

Will have a crack tonight, I think I have some aluminium scrap to use as soft jaws, i'll try to cobble together a strap wrench from old seatbelt material.

I hope it works coz that Jacobs chuck (precision model) won't be cheap to replace!

Try an oil filter strap if you have it.

A decent keyless chuck actually has a couple of holes that you can use a C spanner to tighten or loosen the thing.

I don't remember seeing c spanner holes but i'll have another look tonight.

nope, I do that shit all the time. The difference is I know I have a spanner to undo the bastard.

I don't know how hard your chuck is but you may be able to drill some holes in the side like these ones.

D-Clamp? thats how i get holesaws out of the drill when they get stuck at work...

dude dont use multi grips ..just a 3 inch g clamp.. a lot less brutal on the knurled surface . one of my fkn apprentices put a vice grip on mine.. i near killed him. and still might

I destroyed one with a grinder to get a drill bit out.

$30 ozito drill that burnt out and had a good 12.5mm drill bit in it so I cut the thing open with a cut off wheel

i just use multi grips on mine at work, and put the drill in reverse... but i'm not overly attached to it
