I'm changing my sump gasket and I'm wondering whats the best sealant to use

How hard is it to change a sump gasket.do you put the sealant both sides of the gasket.

there is no gasket used on suzuki sumps only the sealant...

clean both surfaces so they're spotless, apply a bead around one of the flanges (engine or sump) & around the bolt holes, let it tack off slightly, then refit the sump.

there is a cork gasket available for 8 valve engines

sorry boss, didn't realise that there was one for the 8 valve, i was recalling this post of losfers & his hate of cork gaskets...

most suzukis left the factory with silicone (3 bond) as a sump gasket. when you go to remove the sump from the engine it takes quite some force.

the only time i will ever use a cork gasket is in a "in car situation" where theres a possibility of scraping some of the silicon on something else and compromising the seal , in this case i will use a cork gasket that is glued to the sump using contact adhesive , you should never use a silicon sealant with a cork gasket.

Suzi Store list a cork gasket for the 16v engine, but when ordered they send a 8v gasket

Can you also smear the sealant around the sump or you have to do that bead apply.

Has to be enough so when you bolt the sump on, the silicone squishes and seals a good amount on both sides.

Both sides must be clean of oil.



Most of my oil gaskets go in the bin to run silicone only.

This threads kinda been talked to death already, but I can vouch for the Locktite product pictured above and comes with clear instructions on how to apply.

I rebuilt a 202 Holden Red motor once. Someone had used silicone instead of the cork gasket for the sump, bits of silicone had separated off and partially blocked the oil pickup. The bearings were nicely down to the copper.

A mates 253 had the same issue with the silicon.

But for a Sierra motor it works just fine.

The problem is people must think they need to use the whole tube for a thermostat housing.

No the problem is that there are numerous silicone sealants but not all are designed to be used where oil is in play, if you use the correct one you will not have this problem.

Sorry what i mean is People use a Contact adhesive rather then silicon to glue the gasket on
