Right so I have a NGV 2.4 J24B, 4months ago I replaced the head after it cracked, Common problem I know. Well now Its gone and cracked the block! Also a relatively common issue. It hurts!!!!!!
Now I need another vehicle. So i'm looking at a V6 NGV instead. My questions, what is the H27A like? Any known issues? What do you think of them?

I have not found mine to be too heavy on the juice.. Compared to a 6G72 in a Magna.. this engine sips fuel... 10l/100K on the Highway and around 15 in the city... in a 1.8T 4x4 is not too bad..

I'd go for the later model with the 3.2l V6 (I've got a H27A in a 2004 XL-7). It goes okay, but every time it's started there's a couple of seconds of rattling. They also seem very fussy on what oil filter you use - some will give you horrendous chain rattle. Last time I checked mine was getting just under 14l/100km in suburban Adelaide (with the 5 spd auto trans.)

Thanks for the input guys. I really like the NGV so want to stick with one, not sure if this is madness or not, as I do about 60000kms a year. The 2.4 is just a complete pile of rubbish. So the 2.7 seems like it may be an option, I have considered the 2.0 but think it might be a little but gutless, unless they have improved since the original GV. and the 3.2 is is as rare as hens teeth, and right out of my price range.

The fuel economy will hit you doing 60000km per year. What sort of economy was your J24B getting?
The H27A and the 5 speed auto go very nicely together (I assume the NGV drive train would be virtually identical to my 2004 XL-7?)

you cant compare the xl-7 to the ngv.
for one thing the newer h27s have vvt where the older ones didn't I believe.

Am getting about 12l/100km with the J24b. I do alot of open road stuff and with the 4speed its doing about 2700rpm at 100kms. From what I can tell the H27a might even work out cheeper to run, due to revving less I guess. Dad has one and on a 450km trip to Taupo for a family event he used $20 less each way than I did.

yikes your running about 8.3 ks per litre?
I get about 9-10 per litre.
I only get 7 per litre towing my comp zook on a trailer behind it.

H27A main power difference has to do when the exhaust size went slightly larger, NGV would have ironed out any issues the XL-7's had. the timing chain rattle was fixed in mid 2002.
There is a big difference between the stock 2.18inch exhaust to the 2.5" exhaust. Not sure what the new GV has but prob 2.25" and also weighs less i would imagine so better fuel economy esp on the high way where ive read avg around the 9 and around 10-12 in the city. Also would have a nock sensor so make better use of higher octain fuel and different mapping over the xl-7
The H motors also self adjust so low maintenance, just take care of the oil, filters and normal maint and they last a very long time. Torque wise they are quite torquey down low and like to rev i have had mine down to around 400rpm and didnt stall on a hill climb. I would much prefer it over the later GM motor. Reason why monster used it in the Pikes hill challenge for soo many years even in the SX4 because it was a tough reliable motor that took a ton of abuse eg two turbos and close to 1000hp. and doesnt mind reving at 4500rpm all day as in the plains they use them in.
Would love the ngv H27A motor and auto transmision in my xl-7

Your H27A would have a knock sensor - I just checked on the Suzuki service manual for the first series XL-7. The five speed auto would make the biggest improvement to your XL-7.

I edited while you were posting - the five speed auto (in place of your four speed) would make a huge improvement.

3 NGV 2.7's with daily duties within my family. A couple of problems with one which were related to a dying catalytic convertor around 135k and no other issues. The other two have been flawless.

yeh mate. No issues at all with the H27a. just be aware that there is little to no performance parts for engine. The extractors are available but not worth (plenty of topics on here) as the standard headers are pretty good.
As for fuel, I get about 10 liters for 100 on the highway and 12 around town. I run 275/75 AT tyres and have a snorkel which made a good difference .
Engines are fussy about the filters, I'd recommend changing the oil filters every 7500kms the engine noise since i've started doing that has quietened right down.
Little low in the low revs torque, but they love a good rev.

Just wondering. I have a JB627 and the engine has around 211,000kms. Are there any long term issues with this many kms I should worry about? Also, might be due to the poor filter, I get around 12.8l/100kms in town and around 10.5-11L/100km on the highways. Any way I can bring it back down a bit?

From everything I've seen, that economy is normal.
